What is Bharatnatyam?

Bharatanatyam is one of the oldest and most prominent classical dance forms of India, with origins in  Tamil Nadu over 2,000 years ago. Originally performed as a form of devotion, it combines graceful movement, intricate footwork, mudras (expressive hand gestures), and abhinaya (detailed facial expressions) to convey stories, often from Hindu mythology. The name "Bharatanatyam" is traditionally broken down into “Bha” for bhava (emotion), “Ra” for raga (melody), “Ta” for tala (rhythm), and “Natyam,” meaning dance in Sanskrit.

What is an Arangetram?

An Arangetram is a Bharatanatyam dancer’s debut solo performance, marking the culmination of years of dedicated training under a guru. The word means “ascending the stage” in Tamil, symbolizing the dancer’s readiness to perform independently. The Arangetram showcases the dancer’s mastery of technique, rhythm, and expression. It is both a cultural celebration and a significant milestone in a dancer’s journey.
